I recently gave DeWalt’s new 20v cordless framing nailer (DCN920) a run and was more than pleased with its performance. The biggest improvement over previous models is that the new flywheel design eliminates ramp-up time between shots in rapid sequential (bump) mode. In addition to improved recovery time, the tool’s ability to sink nails to the proper depth consistently is quite impressive.
So far, I have shot over 3000 31/4-in., 12d nails into various materials, including LVL, Parallam, pressure-treated 6×6, and conventional framing lumber. There were very few instances when a nail didn’t sink as desired, which will happen from time to time regardless of the tool. Stainless Steel Plastic Coil Nails Diamond
DeWalt has added a tip that is more aggressive, which enables you to confidently pull the trigger when toe-nailing. The nailer weighs in at 8.6 lb. and also features a dry-fire lockout when four nails are left in the magazine. The magazine that comes with the gun holds one strip of nails, but a magnesium extended magazine ($90) is available separately that holds two.
In the event of a jam, the DeWalt framing nailer has a jam-clearing rod that is really useful and unique. A lever located on top of the unit allows you to retract the piston back into firing position manually. For severe jams and other issues, there’s an onboard Allen wrench.
The swivel rafter hook under the handle is well-designed, and there are additional spots machined into the tool that fit those smaller belt hooks included with the cordless drills and other DeWalt tools. Our crew strictly uses framing nailers with plastic-collated strip nails, which the 21° DCN920 uses. For those who like paper strip nails, the 30° DCN930 is the choice.
