Turkey is one of the world’s top 10 biggest steel producers and is home to many electric arc furnaces. Over the past decades, Birim Makina became a preferred and trusted brand in Turkey as well as the Middle East. It produces a wide range of recycling equipment in accordance with the highest circular economy standards of Europe and North America.
Today, the company operates worldwide, offering dedicated solutions. It has equipment running in 70 countries, including the US, Germany, Japan, Brazil, India, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. heavy duty metal shears
Birim Makina specialises in baling and briquetting presses, shears, shredders, stationary and mobile material handling machines for metal recycling and carries out all its activities in the field of metal recycling.
The family business was founded by Şevket Karahan. The engineer was always driven by innovation, laying the foundations for what was to become a global player in the metal recycling equipment industry. He has been assisted by Sevgi Karahan as the finance head of the company.
While building equipment for saving the environment, Birim Makina is endeavouring to cut production emissions to zero. The factory produces its own electricity, supplied by solar cells installed on the roof. Staff, including the founder, drive electric vehicles as company cars using the electric power from the solar panels.
Aykut Karahan took over the management of the company 10 years ago after several decades in strategic positions within the company. It is extremely important to Karahan that his team develops and understands the machine 100% and that the production is in the hands of the company from the steel sheet to the finished machine.
Under his leadership, the total production area has grown to a total area of 50,000 m², of which 35 000 m² is already in use and remaining area is waiting for the future expansion. This year alone, a new 10 000m² welding factory was put into operation, where mainly large parts are welded by state-of-the-art robots in a 24/7 operation.
Other highlights have been the opening of Birim Europe in Germany to better serve the European market and the launch of a new 1 000 tonne scrap shear with side press technology. Energy efficiency, ease of servicing, ergonomics, occupational safety and cutting capacities of up to 60 tonnes at five cuts per minute were the main focus for the design team.
The Birim machine portfolio covers more than 85% of the metal recycling machines required in the scrap trade, automotive industry and steelworks. But new machines and service are not the only priorities for Aykut Karahan and his team.
‘Trade-ins of used machines, hire and complete overhauls of metal recycling equipment are our day-to-day business, enabling our customers to get started cost-effectively or to switch to larger equipment. Because we design and manufacture everything ourselves, we can also fulfil customer requests for any steel construction at any time.
‘All sizes of cylinders, replacement components for Birim and third-party equipment are routine for us and are increasingly the start of a long-term customer relationship.’
