ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A man had to undergo emergency surgery Thursday after being attacked by a suspect wielding a pair of separated garden shear blades, according to authorities.
St. Louis County prosecutors on Friday charged 40-year-old Douglas L. Warner, of St. Louis, with first-degree assault with serious injury, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm by a dangerous felon. Cold Cut Saw
Warner is currently confined in the St. Louis County Jail without the possibility of bond.
According to a St Louis County Police probable cause statement, Warner approached a house carrying a tool bag, inquired where a former associate was and said he had “two pieces of candy” for them.
A man sitting in a pickup truck nearby exited his vehicle to see what was happening. Warner allegedly pulled out two rusty garden shear blades, which had been separated, and began attacking him.
As the victim backed up, Warner slashed the victim’s wrist to the bone, according to the statement.
The victim fled and used a trash bin as a shield while Warner allegedly continued attacking him. After falling to the ground, Warner slashed both the victim’s legs with the shears, police said.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and had to undergo emergency surgery due to his injuries.
Warner then allegedly fled on foot, discarding the shears. Officers located him running through a grocery store parking lot while carrying the tool bag. He was placed under arrest.
Police said officers found a handmade firearm and six rounds of ammunition inside the tool bag.
Following his arrest, Warner allegedly told police he smoked methamphetamine before being detained.
Warner is precluded from possessing a firearm due to a previous conviction for first-degree robbery in St. Louis, according to the statement.
An initial court appearance has not been set.
