In recent years, we’ve reviewed dozens of models and directly tested 20 adjustable bases with consumers.
Our analysts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab began with in-depth research and vetting, identifying the most popular bed bases and reviewing their materials, specifications, features and claims. When possible, we also visited the brand's stores to evaluate the bases firsthand, assessing their functionality and determining which types of users they best suit.
Next, we recruited at-home consumer testers, including those with sleep disorders like insomnia, restless legs syndrome (RLS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), as well as health conditions like acid reflux. They provided feedback on everything from setup to long-term experience. We also surveyed our consumer tester panel for insights on mattresses and bed bases they already own.
Based on expert reviews and user feedback, here are the key factors we evaluate for each adjustable bed:
✔️ Ordering and delivery: Users tell us how easy it was to order the base and if it arrived quickly. They also note any potential problems that came up and how those issues were resolved.
✔️ Setup: Whether DIY or handled by a delivery service, survey respondents provide feedback on the process, including the clarity of instructions and tips for other users.

Most adjustable bed bases on the market are manufactured by Leggett & Platt or Ergomotion, meaning the key differences between brands and retailers often come down to customer service and delivery methods. Additionally, keep these factors in mind:
✔️ Price: Most adjustable bases cost between $1,000 and $2,000 for a Queen-size model, though excellent options with fewer features are available at lower prices, and high-end models can cost more. Keep in mind that Split King models are typically more expensive due to the need for separate motors for each side.
✔️ Height: Most adjustable bases come with adjustable legs that you'll need to set up. Some models have only one height option, while others are zero-clearance, allowing placement directly on a bed frame or box spring without legs. So consider the height before purchasing: Does the base need to fit within your existing bed frame? Or do you have a preference for how high your bed (including the mattress) should be from the ground?
✔️ Programmable positions: Most models include presets such as anti-snore (elevated head to reduce airway pressure), zero-gravity (elevated head and foot for a weightless feel) and a flat setting. Also, consider if you want to use a remote control or an app on your smartphone to control the bed.
✔️ Warranty: A warranty ensures you're covered if something goes wrong due to a manufacturing defect — not consumer error. Be sure to document the initial condition of your base and check for any defects upon delivery. Most warranties provide full coverage for the first few years, transitioning to prorated or limited coverage afterward. If purchasing through a third-party retailer, confirm that they are authorized to avoid issues with warranty claims.
Dr. Kirschner emphasizes the importance of personal comfort when shopping for any type of mattress or bed, especially for those with underlying conditions. While elevating the head and feet when sleeping can help take the stress off of some pressure points, it won't completely resolve existing neck or back pain, so it's best to consult with a physician to identify the nature of any recurring pain.

✔️ Reducing snoring: If you snore at night, you're not alone. Up to 45% of adults snore on an occasional basis. But when sharing a bed with a partner, snoring can negatively impact your quality of sleep. It's usually indicative of a partially obstructed airway, which Dr. Kirschner explains that is based on anatomic factors like a bulky throat and neck tissue or nasal congestion. Slight elevation of your head may help alleviate pressure on your upper airway, but it's not a guaranteed fix, especially if you have moderate to severe OSA, so it's best to consult with a medical professional in case of an underlying issue.
It depends, but many testers, especially those with OSA or acid reflux, swear by them. They range widely in price — from under $1,000 for a simple base that raises the head and feet to over $3,000 for a high-end model with smart technology. If you’re investing in a new bed, a full sleep system with an adjustable base and mattress may be worth considering. However, if you’re only looking to enhance comfort, you might prefer an adjustable mattress for firmness control or an adjustable base that just adjusts head and foot positioning.
Most of the time, yes. The majority are compatible with foam, latex and innerspring mattresses, though foam or latex mattresses tend to work better with adjustable bed frames because the materials are more flexible, allowing for easy transition to different positions. Note that tall mattresses (especially those over 14 inches) often don't work well on bases, so make sure to check any specifications for your top contenders. You'll also want to make sure that any coils in innerspring or hybrid beds are individually pocketed.
Some brands sell the mattress and base together, which is your best bet if you want to make sure you have a compatible mattress for an adjustable bed. Otherwise, it’s best to check with the adjustable base brand before you buy it. Some do have restrictions on the mattress you can use, so it’ll save you a headache if you confirm beforehand. And when it comes to adjustable mattresses with different firmness levels, you don’t need a special base to get the benefits.
