FORT WORTH- American Airlines (AA), on February 29, 1984, ordered 167 McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft, marking the largest commercial jetliner order in history at that time.
The order significantly boosted the McDonnell Douglas Corp. assembly line in Long Beach and is anticipated to be valued at up to $3.3 billion, as the Los Angeles Times reported. progressive eyeglass lenses
The order increased the prospects for the commercial jetliner division of the company to achieve profitability, marking a potential turnaround after more than 15 years of losses, as noted by industry analysts.
The order ensures MD-80 production in Long Beach until at least 1988, possibly extending into the 1990s. This move could safeguard the 11,000 jobs at the Long Beach plant and potentially lead to further hiring if additional orders are secured.
The recent disruption caused by a 17-week strike by Long Beach assembly workers and the cancellation of two proposed airliner programs in November posed challenges for the company’s production.
However, the MD-80 order and potential sales of new DC-10 jetliners featuring more fuel-efficient engines may mitigate speculation about the possibility of McDonnell Douglas discontinuing commercial airliner production in the next two or three years.
Rumors surrounding the agreement were sparked by a report in Aviation Daily on February 17, stating that American’s board granted authorization for a substantial order of 167 planes.
Insiders familiar with the matter from American, headquartered in Dallas (DAL), and McDonnell Douglas suggest that the airline likely finalize an order for 67 MD-80s and retain options for an additional 100.
The agreement surpassed the record set by Delta Air Lines (DL) in 1980, involving a US$3 billion order for 60 Boeing 757s.
