When it comes to bathrooms, practicality is key, but who says they can’t be equally beautiful? With just a few thoughtful changes, you can create a space that’s as functional as it is stylish, and it doesn’t have to take hours. In fact, these five-minute upgrades will instantly refresh your space.

Swapping outdated or plastic fixtures for more refined alternatives can instantly enhance your bathroom space. ‘Changing a bathroom tap or lavatory seat is relatively easy in most modern homes, and it makes a genuine difference,’ says George Manders, bathroom design expert and senior sales consultant at Haddon.

Using the same material – chrome, copper, or nickel – across all fixtures makes everything look cohesive. George also recommends replacing plastic items, such as toilet brushes or paper holders, with options made from finer materials for an instant upgrade.

Often, the simple flick of a switch has the power to transform the ambience of a space. 'Bathrooms benefit greatly from layered lighting: think mirror lights, wall lamps, or plinth lights alongside ceiling fixtures,' says George. For a quick fix, opt for dimmable bulbs. ‘Most bathrooms rely on bright, daylight bulbs, which can feel cold and austere,' he says. ‘Switching to dimmable or warmer-toned bulbs can create a much more relaxing atmosphere.'

Plants are an easy way to add life and colour to your bathroom. ‘Freshly cut flowers or pot plants soften the stark aesthetic of a bathroom,’ says George. Tall, sculptural plants can look striking, but they're not just for decorative purposes; some are practical, too. Spider plants and peace lilies can even absorb moisture, helping to prevent mould. ‘Hanging plants up high can also trick the eye into making the space feel larger,' adds George.

Clutter can quickly ruin a bathroom's look, but organising your essentials doesn’t have to take long. ‘Containing toiletries in baskets or trays instantly makes a bathroom feel more cohesive.’ Bring designer products to the front or decant everyday items into sleek ceramic dispensers for a polished look. Tuck larger items away in cupboards or drawers for a neat finish.

Upgrading your towels is one of the quickest (and cosiest) ways to enhance your bathroom. ‘A warm, soft towel appeals to both the eye and touch,’ says George. ‘Old, rough, or greying towels lower the tone of the space and feel even worse. Opt for plush, high-thread-count towels in neutral or complementary colours to create a spa-like feel.’
