A 30-inch transmission main pipe on Highway 87 experienced a “catastrophic failure" on Friday Dec. 20, according to the FairPoint Regional Water System.

The utility tells WEAR News customers have nothing to worry about. The executive director says that includes the quality of the water.

Jeff Crigler says when the main pipe broke Friday afternoon backup wells kick started. He says that water is safe to use.

"That means the pipe could not hold pressure and water was leaking out the pipe," says Crigler.

Crigler is the executive director of the FairPoint Regional Water System and the CEO of Holley-Navarre Water System. He says that pipe serves drinking water to south Santa Rosa County. He says the utility immediately shut off the water flow..

"Our crews worked late Friday night, Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon to try to get it fixed," Crigler says. "They were unsuccessful. Basically, with the nature of the break they can't get the repair fittings on. So we’ll try again on Thursday.”

Crigler tells WEAR News they notified their three-water system members to start backup wells.

"Basically, Holley-Navarre, we would run our wells. Midway Water System is to run their wells," says Crigler. "And Gulf Breeze, they have a temporary interconnect with ECUA that they’re able to utilize for a backup supply.”

He says the quality of the water and water pressure shouldn’t be impacted. There’s no water boil notice.

Crigler says the water could temporarily look different but it’s safe.

"As the direction of the flow changes in the pipes, sometimes you can get some decolorization,” says Crigler.

He says crews will work to repair the break Thursday as a temporary solution.

"Either way, we're going to provide a new one," Crigler says. "We're going to put in a new pipeline at that intersection. Because it’s time to replace it.”

Right now, Crigler says there’s no timeline of when the new installation will start. He’s currently talking with the contractor.
