On November 17, the holiday of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy - formerly known as Student Day - is being celebrated for the thirty-fifth time. On this day in 1989, the demonstration officially began against the communist regime, against the deepening economic and political crisis. 11.11. 2024 – 30.1. 2025 / Red Church / Velvet Revolution through the lens of Jiří Frait "In the Red Church, we will commemorate the 35th anniversary of one of the most significant events in our history thanks to the photo exhibition Velvet Revolution through the lens of Jiří Frait," said VKOL director Iveta Ťulpíková. Jiří Frait, a highly respected photographer and a native of Olomouc, documented the events in the squares and streets of the city in November 1989 and the following months. The exhibition of his black-and-white photographs is a memory both of the now-deceased artist and his work, as well as of how the events in Prague affected other places in the country and what their participation was.

16.11. 15:00 / Nábřeží Josef Jařab / Ceremonial unveiling of the sculpture with the likeness of Josef Jařab On the Olomouc embankment, the work of Olomouc artist Radomír Surma will be unveiled. It is a portrait of one of the most important Olomouc figures of the revolution, Josef Jařab - the first pro-revolutionary rector of Palacký University. The embankment is also officially named after him. Now he will also have his own sculpture on display at this location.

17:30 / Kino Metropol / Screening of the film Waves As part of the FFest, one of the Czech cinematographic gems was selected by means of a poll, which will then be shown in the Metropol cinema. There were the following images to choose from: Waves, Kolja, Beds, General school. In the end, the film Waves, a highly acclaimed film of this year, became a Cult in the Metropol.

17.11. The building of the Faculty of Arts at 10 Křižkovského Street will be open to the public all day. This day and the entire following week, images and information depicting the events and progress of the Velvet Revolution on the grounds of the Olomouc University will be on display here.

14:00 / Aula FF UP / Presentation of the book My Friend Josef Jařab In the hall of the Faculty of Arts, it will be presented, made up of friendly memories of the already mentioned rector of the university. There will also be reading excerpts from the book.

16:30 / Náměstí Republiky / Lantern parade

17:11 / space in front of the UPOL Faculty of Law / Commemoration of the Day of the Fight for Freedom and Democracy and the International Student Day will be held at the monument to the fighters for freedom and democracy in front of the Faculty of Law. The whole event will end with fireworks. The whole event will be accompanied by the sounds of the Olomouc Military Band.

17.11. / ZŠ Hlubočky – Ves / Festival of Freedom A varied program will be held all day on the premises of Hlubočky – Ves Elementary School. For art lovers, concerts by promising young artists or a creative corner even for the little ones, for those interested in the history of the exhibition of photographs from the area during the days of the revolution. There will also be a screening of the film Memory of the Nation. Refreshments are also provided, and its profits will then go to the project "Let's open a hospice garden at Svaté Kopeček".

4.11. – 30.11. / Dolany Municipal Office / Poster Exhibition 1989: Year of Miracles The exhibition will be open throughout the month of November on the 1st floor of the Dolany Municipal Office.

16.11. / cinema RETRO / screening of the documentary 35 years from Velvet Screening of the documentary about the Velvet Revolution in the surroundings of the city of Olomouc. After the screening, there will also be a discussion with the witnesses of the November events together with a projection of period photographs.

17.11. / hall of the cultural club DUHA u hradeb / 35 years since the Velvet Revolution A one-day program, the golden point of which will be the screening of the movie Velvet Days Prostějov 1989. Later, there will be a commemoration of the victims of the totalitarian regime and the laying of flowers at the monument. The entire program will end with a ceremonial playing of the national anthem.

22.11. 17:00/ Vincence Priessnitz Library / We were also... women in Slovak dissent A rather unconventional commemoration will take place in Jeseník with a discussion with Slovak sociologist, political scientist and adviser to the former Slovakian president Oľga Gyárfášová. She tells her story, when she herself joined Slovakia's unofficial pro-revolutionary movement, which eventually resulted in persecution by the regime. At the same time, she will present her book of interviews with ten of her female companions, How We Lived in the Years of Normalization.
