Envelope with white powder delivered to Milwaukee County DA's Office

An envelope addressed to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office, which is in the Milwaukee County Safety Building at 8th and State streets, caused a hazmat scare Monday afternoon.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern told WISN 12 News a staffer opened a certified letter and discovered it had white powder in it. bakery packaging box

They immediately called the Milwaukee Fire Department, and Hazmat crews arrived.

The staffer, and the area they were in, were cleaned up and everyone was OK, Lovern said. Three people were being evaluated because of their exposure to it.

The building was not evacuated, just part of the district attorney's office.

It's unknown who the letter was actually addressed to.

The Milwaukee Fire Department cleared the scene about three hours later, after deeming the material "safe." Lovern said it was determined to be sugar.

None of the other parts of the Safety Building or Milwaukee County Courthouse were affected.
