With 2024 almost behind us, one thing we’re taking into the new year is our newfound love for DIYs, crafty nights in, and, of course, scrapbooking. And as a self-proclaimed craft-girl, I’m quietly excited that scrapbooking – or similar – is now a certified cool-girl activity. Being able to revive my forgotten hobbies of an era bygone has been not only enjoyable but also a unique way to spend quality time with friends and loved ones.

The rise of digital scrapbooks has taken over our social media feeds, but I’ll always have a soft spot for the analogue version. And, if you’re looking to get into scrapbooking – particularly as we welcome the new year, you’re at the right place.

Whether you’re using a scrapbook to showcase special moments in life, the trick is to put as little pressure on yourself as possible while you let your creativity run wild. And don’t just take our word for it – in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, scrapbooking officially gets the Sofia Grainge tick of approval, too.

“It’s really good for me mentally to journal. And I actually found out I’m a scrapbook girl,” Sofia says.

Scrapbooking is ultimately a form of journalling. And with 2025 just a stone’s throw away, it’s good to be prepared for the upcoming influx of end-of-year reflection questions and new-year goal-setting sessions.

To set you up for scrapbooking success, it’s crucial you’re armed with the essentials – from Polaroid printers to coveted bullet journals from Leuchtturm1917 – below are the exact bits and bobs you’ll need for 2025 vision boards, scrapbooking dates, and beyond.

Best for: capturing memories on the go

When we think of scrapbooking, our minds instantly go to Polaroid pictures and washi tape. The Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 is an easy-to-use camera that’ll encourage you to take photos on the go.

Colours: Lilac Purple, Mint Green, Pastel Blue, Blossom Pink, Clay White

Best for: a blank canvas

Highly coveted for a reason—the Leuchtturm1917 dotted notebook will be the perfect (almost) blank canvas for your scrapbooking creations. The dotted pages act as a subtle guideline for pasting, cutting, doodling, writing, and more.

Colours: Black, Blue, Forest Green, Lilac, Mint Green, Nordic Blue, Port Red, Red, Sage

Best for: cutting and pasting

This set of eight features grid-patterned and solid-coloured washi tapes to choose from. Available in various colourways, add your favourite hues to your basket and let your imagination run free.

Colours: Violet, Forest, Rising Sun, Milk Tea, Purplish Blue, Black White, Champagne, Ocean, Yellow, Rainbow, Bluestone, Rose Red

Best for: the finer things in life

Similar to finding the perfect pair of jeans, there is much to consider when choosing the perfect black fineliner for journalling, scrapbooking, and everything in between. It has 41,762 reviews on Amazon, with an average rating of 4.7 stars out of 5; it’s safe to say we’ve found the perfect pack of fineliners for you.

Sizes: Tip sizes from 005 to 08.

Best for: easily glueing photos down

A simple gluestick could do the trick…but why would you when you could be a proud owner of an adhesive dispenser from Scrapbook Adhesives? This handy dispenser is a game-changer and will ensure your prized bits and bobs are securely attached to the page.

Best for: taking your vision board to the next level

Letter stamps are great for headings within your pages – they also help add a bit of consistency to your page design, too. Letter stamps are a scrapbooking non-negotiable.

Scrapbooking simply cannot commence without a high-quality photo printer. The Ivy 2 mini photo printer by Canon is our pick – your photos will be printed on a peel-and-stick backing, making it an ideal choice for scrapbooking, DIYs, and beyond.

As mentioned, there is no right or wrong way to scrapbook. However, ensuring you have the essentials will make your scrapbooking experience much more enjoyable. Our scrapbooking essentials are outlined above; however, as a bare minimum, you’ll need a good quality notebook with at least a paper weight of 120gsm. This ensures you can easily adhere photos and stickers to the page. It’s also a good weight to start with if you’re using felt tips or markers, as a thicker paper weight means your pens won’t bleed through to the next page of your notebook.

Your scrapbook is the ideal place for storing photos and mementos throughout the year(s). It’s also a great place for journalling, too. These are three main elements of scrapbooking – but this is simply a guideline (which you don’t have to follow). In our opinion, there are no rules to scrapbooking.

Depending on your budget, scrapbooking can be a very easy and inexpensive hobby for beginners. However, some supplies may be more expensive than others; there is an array of scrapbooking supplies to choose from – from affordable to high-end to suit your preference.
