Put us out of our misery, Nintendo
As we get closer and closer to the official reveal of the Switch successor, a sharp increase in rumours and bold claims is bound to happen. The latest comes from Reddit and precariously straddles the line between plausible and utterly bizarre. It also happens to be a rather old idea; one that we could certainly see come to fruition in the future, but right now..? We're not completely convinced yet. Latching Push Button
It's all to do with scroll wheels. Specifically, scroll wheel shoulder buttons. The idea comes from Redditor 'Adjacent-Adjunct', who claims to have held a dummy model of the upcoming 'Switch 2'. They state that the model had no innards of any kind, nor any indication of ports or vents. Hmm... Convenient.
What they do say, however, is that the shoulder buttons can now scroll; much like those you might find on a PC mouse, albeit stiff enough that you can still click the buttons in without accidentally scrolling them. Amusingly, they compare the concept to that of a store conveyor belt, which... okay, fine!
Before we comment any further, let's take a look at the exact statement:
"Now here's the cool part, the shoulder buttons could spin! I sat there playing with it in my hands and staring at it for like 2 or 3 straight minutes before moving on, spinning these wheel-like things in my fingers because it was so strange but satisfying. It reminds me somewhat like a mouse wheel where it spins as you run your finger along it but still clicks like a button. These also still clicked in like L and R do. Each step of the rotation made a satisfying tick feeling in your fingertips as it moved, like a mouse wheel again, but a very heavy one that takes a bit of force to make move. Otherwise they were sturdy enough to not spin when just clicking the buttons in. They weren't like normal wheels because they were not circular shaped, they were more squared off like the current Switch shoulders shape is. Instead it felt more like a rubber material-type band that was over a track that allowed it to spin.
"To help visualize, the best comparison I can think of that people see every day is somewhat like the conveyor belt at stores during checkout. I guess this lets it have that rectangular shape and not be a huge circle internally. I'm personally excited to see what Nintendo does with this!"
Now, there are a few things going against this. First, a random Redditor isn't exactly the most credible of sources. Second, it seems a bit odd for Nintendo to produce a dummy of its upcoming console that has no innards, no ports, no vents, yet conveniently still retains functional buttons. Third, scroll wheel functionality has been a bit of a talking point this year already: Masahiro Sakurai made a video on the concept, and we even featured a write-up sometime later looking into the viability of a scroll wheel in the 'Switch 2'.
So, are we partially the cause of this..? No no no, of course not, how silly. It's just interesting that, after the dicussions held earlier this year on the concept of a scroll wheel in 'Switch 2', it's now suddenly a thing that's definitely real.
What we're saying is, just be careful out there folks. Rumours are flying around at the moment, and we won't know right from wrong until Nintendo finally lifts the curtain on its new hardware. C'mon Nintendo, we're all waiting...
Everything about the "Switch successor"
"I want to choose fast!"
No need to reinvent the wheel
What do you make of the idea of a scroll wheel in the 'Switch 2'? Think it would work? Let us know with a comment down below.
Nintendo Life’s resident horror fanatic, when he’s not knee-deep in Resident Evil and Silent Hill lore, Ollie likes to dive into a good horror book while nursing a lovely cup of tea. He also enjoys long walks and listens to everything from TOOL to Chuck Berry.
And to think I woke up early to read this. And honestly...I have no idea what to make of this scroll wheel thing for the Switch 2.
I'm imagine cleaning them to be a migraine...
These have been rumoured for at least the past 3 Nintendo systems.
Could be cool if used right but yeah, not just taking it with a grain of salt as one always should when it comes to unofficial information even when it's more likely than not at least partially correct like in the case of Switch 2's recent leak, but highly skeptical considering it's literally just what a random Redditor said.
I like the idea. A scroll wheel sounds like a better way to more quickly move through menu items, such as your Echoes in EoW.
I don't think this will end up being true though. I hope NL is keeping a list of all their Switch 2 rumor articles so when its finally announced, we can see how many of them panned out.
So this model is basically a shell with no internal circuitry, ports, or vents, but it does have functioning conveyor belt-like scrolling shoulder buttons?
They obviously played a lot of the latest Zelda games at Nintendo and were annoyed by constantly opening the menu in-air to equip arrows with materials.
The perfect weapon wheel for consoles. Great addition if true!
Sounds cool, but I want to see practical usage of this feature. And again, I'll wait until we get official news before I become even a bit enthusiastic about these rumours.
@user0 Dunno about that, I've been seeing this rumor for the upcoming system for awhile now.
I know we're all desperate for Switch 2 news but the source being a radom Redditor, who NintendoLife mentions in the article isn't a credible source, is clickbait at its worst.
@Pillowpants I imagine it allows analog triggers without actual analog.
Not a fan of analog myself since I prefer Nintendo's snappy shoulders, especially when playing an intense action game, but this could be a decent middle ground.
Oh, and could also make Weapon Switching in Devil May Cry more practical, which I'm all for!
How long until we're back to sticks and face buttons inside the screen?
Source is Reddit now? Really? No, seriously… really??
I’m taking a very much wait and see approach and don’t care for rumours and speculation. I will buy Nintendo’s next console day one as always, but I have plenty of games to keep me occupied until then.
Not sure how well utilised they'd be for third party ports but they could be pretty handy if used correctly. It never hurts to have more control options at the very least.
This was patented by Nintendo a year or two before Switch was revealed, so it’s possible. Also very possible this is a fake rumour directly based on that patent description.
Neat to know I can hop on a burner pRedditor account and write some fan fiction and be on this news site within a couple days on a slow cycle day.
Im not sure what one would even use such buttons for? We really don't need MORE buttons anyway. I cant really think of any games that come to mind that could benefit from an extra button. Maybe..maybe Overwatch..
I very much doubt this rumour. Especially in the way that they described it. I would think if you were to implement it you'd go for a mechanically simpler design like an actual wheel or use some kind of touch pad like setup. A "conveyor belt" design seems far too complex
But if they were to implement some kind of scrolling mechanism? I'd be all for it. It's an input that modern controllers are worse for not having and it's the main thing that PC gaming has that a modern controller doesn't have anything close to an analogue of
The most important improvement from Switch 2 I need are FPS BOOST, FPS STABILITY and BETTER PERFORMANCE. No more FPS hiccups, downgraded looking, code in box, partial download, streaming only.
Nah, this doesn‘t really scream credibility, does it? Next one.
Scroll buttons good. Combined with existing function bad. IF and a big if true, would see these as separate to normal shoulder buttons.
This is nothing but clickbait.
@Anti-Matter The specs won't influence code in a box I'm afraid. That's budget titles not wanting to pay for cartridges. Partial download will continue if the carts don't massively increase or bigger ones don't get cheaper. To be honest, with day 1 patches these days across all platforms, most modern games should be considered partial download.
Link to a report on the 2015 patent for this: https://venturebeat.com/games/new-nintendo-patent-reveals-scroll-wheel-shoulder-buttons/
I’ve heard rumours that apparently it’s going to have Smell-O-Vision, you place these fragranced cartridges in a slot similar to fragrant plug ins, they pump out lovely smells and stenches depending on the level or scene in a game.
Take that with a pinch of salt!
First, I think a few folks need to brush up on the definition of 'clickbait'.
Second, not every article on Switch 2 is written with the intention of lending credibility to rumours. The article is clearly filled to the brim with scepticism and is very tongue-in-cheek. We're not for one moment suggestion that you should believe it. It's just a bit of fun on a Monday morning.
In regards to the function as described: “Don't think too much. You'll create a problem that wasn't even there in the first place.”
Now, I think if scroll wheels were implemented, I think Nintendo would just make separate L4 / R4 buttons and not mangle the L / R input.
I call BS. Happy to be proven wrong though.
They were very heavily rumoured around the Wii days before the controller was shown.
And have been a constant rumour ever since.
I feel like it would take up a lot of space inside the controller.
Almost every "Switch 2" "rumors", "speculations" or "leaks" contradicts with each other... Still people believes in them no matter of how ridiculous or impossible it is.
The real "Switch 2" will to 99.8% be vastly different in the end like with NX, Project Reality, Dolphin, Revolution etc... Absolutely everyone believed in all those unreal NX "leaks" and were in denial when the actual Switch got unveiled then. This will happen again.
Heck, even if I purely speculates about that "Switch 2" will having quadruple 24K MK8LEDQ screen with touchable 7D from every angles with smell-o-vision, that it will have 1K cores with 2.7Exahz, 33.3 Petabyte RAM, 1,6 Zettabyte storage and 4.7 Yottaflops, some will for sure believe in me because it's on the internet, so it's the absolute truth then.
There're 2 thing which I can bear of waiting until then. *That Switch surpasses PS2 in 2025. *That "Switch 2". ends up being very different and a lot of weaker like with NX.
"Switch 2" will be just 2x-3x more powerful, my bet is at around 2.5x so a bit below Xbox One then, yet it will still be a huge upgrade over the OG Switch. What the heck will Nintendo do with PS4's power level? It's too much for them in the current state.
@Olliemar28 Very well said. Love reading articles like this and we should all know the context by now.
"...a random Redditor isn't exactly the most credible of sources"
but we encourage such behaviour by giving these guesswork artists the time of day on our website
One of the old NX rumours had scroll wheels replacing the bumpers.
It could be cool for cycling through items, targets, or abilities. Those functions that invariably get tied to the d-pad.
It would be good if there was a tactile response when cycling so you wouldn't 'need' to see a menu. "Bombs are 2 on the left"
I doubt they're on the Switch 2, but it sounds like a good idea to me.
Whatever, I'm starting one. My uncle's cousin's drinking buddy's imaginary friend picked his nose outside Nintendo's warehouse 284 days ago, and is absolutely certain that if you put the Switch 2 into a microwave for 3 minutes it plays the iconic Super Mario Bros. theme.
Hes 100% telling porkies. "How do i know this? " i hear you all say. Well ive held a prototype and it had 8 screens and no scroll buttons.
I'm hoping it's just a random patent that they have no intention of actually using because it sounds horrendous. Like an even more obtrusive version of the already terrible PS4 / PS5 touch pad.
Bop it! the video game confirmed!
These scroll wheels would be perfect for cycling through a load of BS rumours.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed I so hope this is true. I want the QoL sensor to dictate what smells are released. For example the smell of Camomile and Lavender to help me relax during RE4Rmake (or should it be the rancid smell of rotting flesh?). Some delicious cooking smells like frying bacon during Cooking Mama. The smell of salty sea air while cruising round Marina Bay in WaveRace4. The smell of freshly cut grass in Zelda. Actually the more I think about this the more I want it!
I really hope all this is complete baloney. Nintendo has never done such a tiny iteration from one console to the next. Every time has been something very different.
@WheresWaveRace darn it, now I want that too!
Unless there’s a web browser built into the Switch 2 I see no reason to mess w/ the shoulder buttons.
However, it's pretty hard to trust this rumor. It's was hoping for the wheel and when we saw the leaked images it looked like a regular shoulder button and I figured, "oh well". The rumor could be read like, "no it's still magically possible" wishful thinking.
...Okay, this is a sign Nintendo fans are starved for news right now. Not completely implausible, but...reaching.
I would surely appreciate this for Zelda Echoes with its long inventory list of echoes right now. I’m still not buying this rumor for a moment.
Stop leaving us in suspense, Nintendo. I believe in getting things over with…
@rjejr What do you think of the touchpad on the Sony controllers? Just curious why you are so averse to the idea, here.
With more power! Power! Power!
And spinny buttons!!! Buttons!!! Buttons!!!
Unless it's more than just more of the same, it's set to be a rather underwhelming reveal.
It’s Nintendo so who knows. I could imagine shoulder scroll wheels controlling some cool things in game as well, like not just menu items but acting as a right stick maybe. That might be good.
But I think they won’t do it.
It’s looking like Switch to Switch 2 will be like moving from DS to 3DS XL.
One, this sounds dumb and pointless. Two, why is this even an article? If I make a Reddit post saying that I held a protype Yunobo amiibo would you also make an article on that? Please just stop talking about Switch 2 rumors if this is all you got
@Kidfunkadelic83 This is more credible than the Reddit post
This article is just as, if not more valid than the “preorders open for ‘stunning’ Charizard statue” type articles that pop up here.
I think a scroll wheel would be cracking for the equip menus in BOTW/TOTK/any inventory heavy game, and I trust Nintendo and other devs would use them quirkily and creatively too.
the amount of scrollwheels i've had break (including the one I use to reach this comment box!) makes me incredibly skeptical of this concept
Scroll wheels = dirt inside the mecanism, what a terrible idea
@Olliemar28 respectfully, I hope you guys take feedback from the comments. Because myself, along with the majority of other users here, don’t regard this as ‘fun’. I personally hate rumour-based content and I only clicked on it to complain.
POLL would you like to see more spurious "Switch 2" rumor content on your favorite nintendo blog?
(This just in: Journalists are only obligated to report factual news. ✌️)
With all due respect I dont think an apparent half of your audience is wrong for disliking this content. ✌️ I would literally rather read/hear you personally wax poetically on ANY nintendo related topic that see another baseless, boring and frankly lazy "fun rumour article."
"What we're saying is, just be careful out there folks. Rumours are flying around at the moment"
you didn't need to say this as this is the only place many of us are probably even seeing this crap (and it is figurative crap that I would have glossed over naturally if I even bothered with Reddit anymore.) All due respect. And I mean that Because I like your content otherwise, Ollie. 👍👍
@-wc- I also agree that his soapbox or opinion article would have much more value, these kind of articles are a waste of the authors time and ours
Absolutely not. İ know it can be use full. Like Nintendo Wii Remote and the Nunchuck. İ like more the old school gaming. Like playing Super Smash Bros game with a pro controller is always my way.
@Tyranexx less the fans and more NL itself. But it gets clicks and engagement.
Nothing to see here folks just another unconfirmed rumor.
@DanijoEX-the-Pierrot if somehow, this rumor turns out to be true, I’m sure Nintendo will have thought of the difficulties of cleaning something like that, and would take measures to prevent you from having to clean it in the first place.
Still holding out hope for that rumored built in espresso machine
Scroll wheel buttons are NOT a new rumor. We heard this years ago.
It would be interesting, if true. I could see it making menu management a breeze. Though overall, I don't really prefer extra bells and whistles on controllers; I just want controllers that are comfortable, durable, and work as they should.
I’m not a huge fan of the clicking sticks we have today. I tend to accidentally click them when I just intend to move the stick quickly. I guess so tend to grip my controller too tightly for some types of games.
If they did this it seems like it would be easy to click when intending to scroll in the same way it is with the sticks.
If true, and it's the one big iteration, Nintendo Swirl could be the console name.
I don't buy it, if this leak was true I would believe we would of heard this one more often than the others.
One guy did a bad 3D print job that was vaguely switch shaped and people have lost their cool.
I think this will be pretty neat if implemented good.
That's cool and all, but please Nintendo, just give me analog triggers again!
These have been "rumored" ever since Sakurai mentioned the idea. It's not impossible it turns out real but why didn't they appear on the leaked model? I guess they could do a joycon pro I guess?
@Ryu_Niiyama Good point lol. NL needs clicks to keep the lights on I suppose.
Sounds like this will replace joy-cons as the new point of failure that will constantly break on people.
All I want is proper analog triggers for racing games. The fact that the switch didn't have them might be its biggest shortfall IMO.
thats a pretty old rumor. anyway, no, i wouldnt want that. the scroll wheel is the thing that always breaks first on mice for me
If what he's saying is correct, then it wouldn't be a fluid scrolling input in the sense that you can scroll efficiently through many options. It sounds like it takes effort just to twist it once in each direction.
That sounds to me like more of a single twist input, as if Nintendo integrated extra buttons from a Pro controller directly into the L/R buttons.
So now, instead of having one input for each shoulder button, you have up to three individual inputs: the normal button press, left twist, and right twist. That would be pretty interesting, and would give complicated games more options for assigning special attacks to each shoulder twist as opposed to pressing more than one button at once, like L+R, etc.
Monster Hunter Rise became pretty complicated with many of its more complex inputs dancing around various buttons pressed at once, so I imagine having three times as many inputs for each shoulder button could simplify controls significantly.
If this turns out to be real, then Bop-It will have no choice but to make a Switch 2 game just for these new shoulder twists!
Yeah I’m just gonna wait until Nintendo actually reveals it. They were all wrong when the OLED dropped so I doubt they will be right about the next system lol.
However farfetched this might be, it's interesting as far as game design is concerned to consider the Switch 2 sporting full symmetry between the front and back buttons: 8 inputs shared between the face buttons, and 8 inputs shared between the four shoulder buttons (controls sticks not included). Having four extra inputs with LTL/LTR and RTL/RTR (Left [button] Twist Left / Left [button] Twist Right, and Right [button] Twist Left / Right [button] Twist Right) first of all, could let you assign control-stick clicks to one of the shoulder twists without changing the whole control layout. And it could work very well with a game like FFXIV, having 8 inputs on the shoulder buttons for each ability, or, assign the Joycon L twists to zooming the camera in/out, and the Joycon R twists swapping between presets.
Hmm, Switch 2 might not have scroll wheel buttons, but I am pretty sure its gonna use electricity.
If this does happen, it could be... interesting.
Doubt this is real but I just want more of te same experience from Nintendo with more power, Nintendo Power!!
I just want 1080/60. Can we do it?
I want what look to be analogue triggers under the controller (concept from a week or 2 ago) to be the real deal, this i could live without
There are at least one more source that point towards the Switch 2 having scroll wheels.
Maybe add this source to the article:
3 July 2023: https://arch.b4k.co/v/thread/642791354/ https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/nintendo-switch-2-console-scrolling-wheels-feature-leak/
"Hey, not really a “leak” per se, but something interesting.
I work for the TSA at a fairly large airport on the west coast. A large pelican case came through the X-ray and got pulled for screening, and when I asked the guy questions about the case, he asked that he get a private screening for the contents. He and a coworker ended up going into another room with me and a supervisor, and they popped the locks on the case.
Inside was what looked like a large horizontal computer looking thing, almost like a giant internet modem if I had to describe it. The weird thing is it had a controller with it, and it didn’t really look finished (almost like a busted 3rd party little brother controller), but had the normal ABXY buttons, triggers, sticks, etc. only weird thing about it is it had like 2 mouse scroll wheels next to the triggers.
After screening the machine and controller, our machine alarmed, so we had to do a check of the guy’s personal backpack and pat down etc. only reason I’m making a post here is that he had Nintendo business cards stating that they were some sort of hardware developer/engineers. (I forgot the exact title) in Research development.
Idk, the actual machine seemed about the size of an Xbox One or so, so it seems like Nintendo might be out of the portable console business. Who knows if this is actually their next console or what, but it was exciting and I couldn’t really keep it to myself. That’s all."
If true - could have been a dev kit and a prototype pro controller. Of course if the Switch 2 has indeed two scroll wheels, they will be present both on the pro controller and the joy cons.
I think the scroll wheels are plausible for several reasons:
1. Nintendo always include new ideas in their new consoles. As far as I know this has not been done by “the competitors”.
2. It sounds like a useful feature.
3. Sakurai having the scroll wheel idea for the Game Cube controller.
4. If the Switch 2 does indeed have the scroll wheels: It might be the fruit of Sakurai's initial idea. That Sakurai is talking about this in 2023, so many years later, might indicate that he knows something about the Switch 2.
5. Nintendo having a patent for two scroll wheels on a handheld console that looks rather like a Switch.
6. A Nintendo-controller with scroll wheels have been claimed to have been seen.
7. An "empty shell" Switch 2 console have been claimed to have been seen with scroll wheels. I see some people find it very strange that it exists “empty shell” consoles. I don’t find this strange - it could at least be two things: A.) A prototype. They need to make sure everything looks and feels right and so on. Including the possible scroll wheels. B.) An empty shell of the finished model. They are probably handed to manufacturers that make Switch 2 accessories to make sure the accessories fit the console properly. Nintendo would probably not want such companies to get hand on the complete model with electronics. I imagine Nintendo gives out info and items on a need-to-know basis to minimize possible leaks of the finished product.
Until Nintendo unveils the Switch 2, we won't know for sure, but I lean toward the scroll wheels on Switch 2 being true.
Okay so if said wheel were 'facts' then this totally debunks the prototype shell and joy cons that were shown off a few weeks back because if u look close at those joy-con pictures with the big bulky eject buttons on the back you can tell that the left and right buttons were everyday OG Switchy Clicky Goodness! BUT... Even though this is all just speculation and rumors instead of plastic evidence I could seriously get behind this idea. All I'm hoping for is that that leak wasn't real because all that was was just another inch on the screen and some beefier specs with a nice USB-C Cherry on top and that's just really underwhelming to me. I feel like Nintendo has never played it that safe. There's most certainly always a new gimmick involved with new hardware launch. I love the idea of magnetic lock in place joy-con but wouldn't that head shot their CLICK intro that the Switch is so well known for? I stead of slide down and click it's be press in and click. Lol. Nintendo is really making alot of us go through withdrawal and panic with the wait and lock and key air tight lips sealed information mill they have on the new set up. Regardless though I can see this being another Wii fiasco and it's going to be SUPER HARD to snatch a console up. I'm calling it now though. They WILL surpass PS2 in sales and Switch will be the greatest selling console of all time. There is just too much demand and versatility when it comes to the catalog of software it has for it. Nostalgia is a drug and Switch scratches ever crevice when it comes to the games. All of these upcomming collections and revisits/blasts from the past games is really something special. We've almost got a remake/remaster/bring over for what seems like most of ever title from every generation and company you can think of. I've never been more excited for a console since N64 and Gameboy Advance. Just please let it be called Super Switch(SS²NES) or something better then plain ol' Switch 2, Switch Pro, New Switch LL.
@PurpulTyeDye "Okay so if said wheel were 'facts' then this totally debunks the prototype shell and joy cons that were shown off a few weeks back because if u look close at those joy-con pictures with the big bulky eject buttons on the back you can tell that the left and right buttons were everyday OG Switchy Clicky Goodness!"
Well, not exactly, it could have been an earlier prototype. So even if parts of it could be changed in the finished model, other parts of it could still be the same.
Also, the supposedly leaked 3D-models did seem to have buttons, but the physical shell with main board and joy cons had joy cons without buttons inserted and was in an angle where one did not see the top - so these could possibly be the shells for joy cons with scroll wheels.
If true this kind of input would have a lot of potential; a similar idea was Playdate's main USP after all. https://play.date/
give me analog triggers again!
Why? Or, what is the advantage?
I only see people talking about how this makes racing games more realistic, but these same people only uses automatic transmission...
I remember using it on Super Mario Sunshine and that is it. The R and L were awful for Double Dash.
So like for paddle controllers but for shoulder button position. Hmm interesting. Not something I'd think about but we aren't getting trackball shoulder buttons so hmm.
I mean scroll wheels on mice have a place, the web browser on Wii U worked well for scrolling but for games.... Did Nintendo more so leakers take notice of the Playdate and went hmm a scroll shoulder button then a crank, ah ha. Or the leakers were using a scroll wheel at the time and thought huh this sounds plausible right? Right?
Like that's how this sounds to me. It's different for sure but at the same time I don't know what to think really.
If no analogue triggers but scroll wheel ones then for Mario Party minigames I can say sure or for a water pressure thing like Sunshine or others with similar of like Playdate need for rotation in their game design, then how an analogue stick would but for other games I don't know what to think about that.
I'm fine with it as a concept and potential execution, it's no dual screens or other stuff, it's no reworked IR, it's no other stuff but we aren't going to see 1-9 phone pad type button layouts these days that's for sure but a scroll wheel I can see possibilities in, but it's very different and cool that most wouldn't expect a purpose or use immediately.
But just thinking how third parties would respond to it and how much to believe as sounds cool but also not possible Nintendo would go that far I think. An addon controller likely more than to the main system even if the main system having it makes sense as it would need more uses for it.
