You spend a third of your life sleeping. Do it right. Checker Matting
Hold on, they make mattresses organic now? Yep... Well, sort of. There's no governing body to determine what counts as organic. But if there were a mattress governing body, it would probably be Esquire dot com. Our editors are freakish about testing mattresses. Expensive mattresses, cheap mattresses, soft mattresses, and firm mattresses—we've tested them all. We know what mattress to buy if you have back pain, if you sleep on your side, or if you sweat like a pig in your sleep. We've reviewed Saatva. We've reviewed Casper. We've pitted them against each other. What we're trying to say is that there's no one else more qualified to test mattresses. And today we're sharing our honest take on organic mattresses.
We're talking about mattresses made from a combination of wool, natural latex, and cotton. While traditional mattresses are constructed with similar materials, in the manufacturing process they're sprayed and packed with chemicals to make them longer lasting, bug resistant, and less flammable. Organic mattresses do all that with fewer additives and funky ingredients. Whether you want one that's firm and solid, squishy and plush, or something in between, your match is here.
When it comes to the best sustainable mattress, the name you will hear first is Avocado Green. The popular brand makes mattresses with certified organic materials, including organic latex, organic wool, and organic cotton. The eco-friendly latex offers firm, long-lasting support (read: no sagging), while the antimicrobial wool wicks away moisture and provides temperature control (hello, hot sleepers).
In addition, the mattress's covers are made with premium, certified organic cotton that's soft, breathable, and cozy. As for firmness, this mattress offers just the right amount of support, thanks to 1,438 steel coils strategically arranged in five distinct ergonomic zones. Basically, they're designed to support and adjust to your body, so you can find optimal comfort.
Plus, you won't sink into the middle, as you might've on your old crappy mattress. As for the specs, it's 11 inches thick, it has two upholstered handles on both sides in case you need to move it around, and it's nontoxic. It even comes with a one-year trial (which is pretty generous), as well as a 25-year warranty. Not too bad, eh?
We love the Avocado mattress, but we'll tell you this straight: It's just missing that something. We haven't had the luxury of testing an Avocado mattress long-term, but it feels like a standard mattress you'll want to replace in about a decade. Nothing wrong there; that's how most mattresses feel. But if you're a buy-once, cry-once person, it's got to be Saatva.
We've tested tons of Saatva mattresses—including the Classic—and can say with certainty that these are long-term purchases. They're great out of the box, and they hold up to wear-and-tear like no other.
The Zenhaven is Saatva's organic mattress. It's covered in quilted organic cotton. Latex, which runs cooler than memory foam, serves as the cushion, and more dense latex serves as the supportive base. We love the two-sided design of this mattress—one plush, one soft—because Saatvas do have a reputation for being on the firm side. Overall, it's a phenomenal mattress that we fully expect to last more than a decade.
A lot of the options here are latex. Not a problem. Latex is natural. We love latex. But it's not exactly what some people have in mind when they think of an organic mattress. For some buyers, they want something like Parachute's Eco Mattress.
Instead of relying on latex to mimic memory foam, Parachute builds this mattress more like a traditional horsehair one. First, you've got an organic quilted cotton cover. Inside, there are four layers of steel coils and New Zealand sheep's wool. That's it. In terms of number of materials, it's got to have the fewest on this list. (Latex requires some science to achieve the textures we associate with it.) This is an incredibly simple mattress, and it comes together perfectly.
Looking for a mattress that's made with nothin' but high-quality organic latex foam? Meet the Plushbeds Botanical Bliss organic latex mattress. This mattress is made for people who want to customize their bed to their liking.
Made from premium natural latex, soft organic New Zealand wool, and plush organic cotton, this mattress is comfortable, cozy, and perfect for the eco-conscious sleeper. It offers a good amount of support (read: it's firm), thanks to individually wrapped coils, which means it's great for someone who doesn't like to sink into their bed. Plus, these coils help improve air circulation, making it a great pick for hot sleepers.
However, if someone decides one day that they do in fact like sinking into their bed, they can always get the brand's best-selling mattress pad. On top of that, the latex foam layer helps alleviate pressure on the shoulders, hips, and legs, which ultimately relaxes muscles.
If you're looking for an affordable, eco-friendly mattress that doesn't skimp on quality, opt for this top-rated Eco Terra find. It's made with certified organic Arpico latex, organic wool, and certified organic cotton. There are absolutely no chemicals, no polyurethane, and no toxins included, which means it's pure as pure can be. In terms of firmness, this mattress offers buyers two choices: medium or medium-firm. The medium option is great for someone who likes a plusher bed, while the medium-firm is less bouncy. Regardless of which you choose, you can sleep soundly knowing you won't be inhaling chemicals. Enjoy free shipping and returns as well as a 15-year limited warranty.
According to one verified reviewer: "Very Impressed! First week impressions: Medium-Firm was the right choice for my bad back. The expected Latex smell was gone within hours of opening the box. Edge firmness is excellent and overall quality was better than I expected. First few nights' sleep was heaven!"
Handmade in the U.S.A., this Birch mattress has thousands of rave reviews. First and foremost, it's made of natural latex and wool that's soft, comfortable, and plush. It's the ideal blend of firm and plush, making it a great option for back, stomach, and side sleepers alike. It's firm without being stiff and plush without being spongy.
The mattress features individually wrapped coils that make it a bit bouncy, so if you prefer not to sink into your mattress, this is a great pick. And because of those coils, it offers good relief around pressure points. It's also breathable and has moisture-wicking fabric, which makes it perfect for anyone who gets hot while they sleep. Pair this with soft bamboo sheets and you'll enjoy dreamy nights from here on out.
If you're on Team Firm as opposed to Team Plush, opt for this affordable and eco-friendly mattress. It's handcrafted with a pocketed coil spring system that provides enhanced lumbar support, which is suitable for a wide range of body types and sleeping positions. It's not stiff per se, but you definitely won't bounce and bob. One thing that makes this mattress stand out is its three layers: The first one consists of pocketed coils, the second is natural latex foam, and the third is a natural wool that adds a nice amount of cushioning. It provides some good ventilation, too, so you won't have to worry about waking up in a pool of sweat. Something worth noting is that the brand recommends rotating this mattress every three to four months to prevent body impressions.
I mean, we sleep on them. Our editors are always testing mattresses firsthand. Even though we all have our own mattresses, if something new and noteworthy hits the market, we make sure to give it a go. That's how we maintain such a deep knowledge of the mattress and bedding world.
To be brutally honest, we don't love the term "organic mattress." This isn't produce. It's only partly textiles. There's so much that goes into a mattress—stitching, metal coils, rivets—there's no way you could certify a mattress as organic. It's just a marketing term.
That said, to make this list a mattress has to have an eco focus. It has to prioritize natural materials like latex and wool over polyurethane foams. It has to use organic cotton where applicable. Everything here fits that bill.
What is the best mattress on the market?
Obviously, this varies based on personal preference. Generally speaking, though, Saatva is the name to beat at the moment. Our testers love it. Real users love it. Almost no one dislikes it. That said, brands like Parachute and Avocado are killing it in the organic world.
Which type of mattress is best?
A hybrid mattress, which combines some sort of cushioning layer with classic coils, is the best type of mattress for most people.
Which is better, a soft or firm mattress?
Depends on the sleeper. Generally, firm mattresses are better for your back and joints. But if you're a die-hard side sleeper, you'll enjoy a soft mattress that hugs your pressure points.
We are committed to testing fucking everything. We don't just believe in Internet research; we believe in human research. We're fighting the good fight against AI and robots, testing the things you can't. We actually drink the alcohol, use the sheets, stay in the hotels, and, of course, sleep on these mattresses. We're only recommending the best of the best, because that's what you deserve.
